On the evening before her reported de:ath, Laura appeared unusually preoccupied.
We were having dinner when her telephone rang.
She checked the caller information and quickly muted the sound.
I saw her expression shift.
“Is everything alright?” I asked.
She managed a smile.
“It’s just a work matter.”
Later that night, while Ethan brushed his teeth, I noticed her standing quietly near our kitchen window.
Her phone was gripped firmly in one hand.
“Laura?”
She faced me.
For an instant, there was genuine worry in her eyes.
Then she approached and folded her arms tightly around me.
“Michael, I need you to promise something.”
I gave a quiet chuckle.
“You sound pretty serious.”
“I mean it.”
I drew her nearer.
“Tell me what it is.”
“If anything unusual happens, please don’t let somebody persuade you that what you noticed wasn’t real.”

She gently shook her head.
“It’s nothing. I’m exhausted.”
I almost questioned her further.
But Ethan suddenly dashed into the kitchen in his dinosaur pajamas, insisting we read his favorite bedtime story.
Laura pressed a kiss against my cheek.
“We can talk tomorrow.”
That conversation never happened.
At least, that’s what I believed.
The next morning, I awakened a little after five.
Laura remained beside me in bed.
She appeared completely motionless.
I reached toward her shoulder.
“Laura?”
There was no answer.
I gently tried waking her.
She remained frigh.ten.ing.ly unresponsive.
I contacted emergency services and carefully followed the dispatcher’s guidance.
Paramedics reached our house within minutes.
They provided emergency treatment, but eventually informed me that their efforts had been unsuccessful.
I can still picture myself standing near our bedroom doorway as one paramedic explained.
His voice sounded far away.
Cardiac arrest.
No response.
I’m sorry.
Nothing made sense about a healthy thirty-six-year-old woman falling asleep and apparently never awakening.
Yet grief rarely allows anyone the luxury of thinking clearly.
Family members started arriving within hours.
Laura’s older brother, Daniel, immediately assumed responsibility for nearly everything.
